PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball collected its first two wins in Mountain East Conference action this season as the Fighting Falcons took two games from Alderson Broaddus on Friday.
Fairmont State is now 6-10 on the season and 2-4 in MEC play while AB falls to 8-14 on the year and 1-5 in conference contests.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 14, AB 12)
The first game of the day saw 26 total runs as Fairmont State prevailed 14-12 over the Battlers. Ally Maddy took the win in relief after five full innings as she allowed five runs (three earned), five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
The Falcons put four runs in the top of the first as Courtney Moyer led off the game with a double to center field. Caitlyn Kassay brought Moyer home with two outs on an RBI single to center field. Katy Darnell drew a walk and Alexa Andrews made the score 4-0 in favor of Fairmont State off a home run to left field.
In the second inning, Fairmont State added two more runs to the scoreboard as Emily Riggs singled to right field that would bring home Hannah Workman. The Battlers answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning after AB's Maci Cross homered to left field.
AB responded in the third inning as well with three runs to take the 7-6 lead after Battler Cleo McMahon scored on a wild pitch.
The Falcons responded the following inning with a two-out double by Workman that scored Peyton Wetherholt and Moyer.
In the top of the fifth. Fairmont State added to its lead with two runs as Carlie Schlosser doubled to left center gap as Andrews scored on the play. Moyer hit a single to right field as Schlosser came around to score the tenth run for the Falcons.
AB would not go away as the Battlers regained the one-run advantage once more in the sixth inning with four runs. AB's Cross grounded out to Abbey Ammons as Riley Vunak crossed home plate to give the Battlers the 11-10 lead.
Fairmont State registered four runs in the top of the seventh as Riggs hit the go-ahead double to the right-center gap to give the Falcons the 13-11 advantage. Darnell hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Falcons an insurance run as Fairmont State held the 14-11 lead. AB added one more run in its bottom half of the seventh as Fairmont State got back in the win column on Friday afternoon.
The Falcons scored 10 runs on the board with two outs in the contest. Riggs and Andrews each led the Maroon and White with three RBIs apiece as Workman chipped in two RBIs in the contest.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 13, AB 4)
Fairmont State carried the momentum into the second game of the day as the Falcons tacked on 13 runs in the win to take the sweep in Philippi today.
Moyer and Darnell each collected two RBIs in the second contest as Riggs added her third home run of the season in Philippi.
Riggs continued her dominance at the plate with two outs as she sent a ball over the left-field fence to put the Falcons on top, 1-0.
Fairmont State broke the game open in the fourth inning with five runs as Darnell hit a sharp line drive to the outfield that plated Riggs and Workman. Schlosser hit a sacrifice fly to score Shelby Reed as Fairmont State held the 5-1 advantage over the Battlers. Elizabeth Waszkiewicz reached on a throwing error by Alderson Broaddus' shortstop to give the Falcons the five-run lead.
AB cut the deficit to three runs with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Fairmont State bounced back with two runs of its own in the sixth inning.
Moyer sent a line drive to the right field and put on the wheels with a two-out triple. Waszkiewicz and MacKenzie Maddy scored on the play as Fairmont State regained the five-run lead at 8-3.
The Falcons put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with five runs to push their lead to 10 runs. Isabella Yelle singled to left field as Mikayla Moore came around to score on the play. Workman singled up the middle once more as Fairmont State led 13-3. AB was able to score one run in the bottom of the seventh as the Falcons collected the sweep of AB on the day with the 13-4 win in the second game.
In the pitching circle, Shelby Reed went the distance as she allowed four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts on the nightcap.
Fairmont State (6-10, 2-4 MEC) returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 30 in South Euclid, Ohio where the Falcons will take on Notre Dame College in a conference doubleheader.
